ADA Cookbook Chapter 8, How To Draw New Patients By Educating Your Community

1. Identify target groups
a. Service clubs (Lions, Rotary, Jaycees, etc.)
b. Hospital wellness programs
c. Community screening programs
d. Educational programs at retirement homes
e. Speakers Bureau

2. Get your foot in the door
a. Arrange introduction through a patient or other professional.
b. Drop by and introduce yourself.
c. Cold call.

3. Develop 2 or 3 multi-media programs that are educational and entertaining.
a. Program #1- should be low level with very basic information for folks with limited cognitive abilities.
b. Program #2 - should be designed for a more sophisticated audience. Include ALD’s

4. Materials that could make your program development easier:
a."Say What…?" tape - available from AAA
b. Council for Better Hearing and Speech Month promotional materials.
c. Slides from manufacturers

5. Do’s and Don’ts!
a. DO give your audience something tangible to take home with them – a promotional piece, "freebie," magnet business card for example.
b. DON’T promote a single product.
c. DON’T HARD SELL YOUR OFFICE OR YOURSELF.
d. Do give them good, honest, realistic information. Assume they are confused about hearing care options. They will appreciate connecting with a professional whose opinion they can trust.

6. Benefits of Community Education
a. Little to no direct cost to you
b. Increases your name recognition
c.You can set your own schedule and do as few or many as you choose – especially during slow months.
d. The more programs you do, the more requests you will receive.
